nbc 10 news starts now. right now at 11:00, after a wet morning, things are warming up around our area. take a live look at boathouse row, and we may even hit a record. good morning, i'm vai sikahema. but don't get used to the mild temperatures. we're tracking a storm that will bring snow to at least a part of our area. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here now with more on this wild week. glenn? >> yeah, vai, definitely wild. we were near record cold on saturday morning, record warmth today, and now we have a first alert issued for wednesday and wednesday night. a wet travel day, one of the busiest days of the year. it will be wet just about everywhere, rain changing to

snow in much of the area, and some accumulation. the potential for some pretty significant accumulation as the storm develops off the southeast coast, brings rain up at first, but as the storm intensifies offshore, it brings the colder air in and changes rain to snow. so if it intensifies the most, of course, we get more snow farther out to sea, less snow. it is looking like it's going to at least produce some snow, even in the philadelphia area and much more significant snow to the north and west. look at this, we're already 70 degrees. one degree away from the record high in philadelphia. 69 in allentown gusting to 30 miles an hour out of the south, so it is going to be a very warm afternoon for this time of the

year. high temperatures getting into the mid-70s. now, it will be cooler he shore with the wind coming in off the ocean. there are some incredible numbers for this time of the year. and just imagine two days from now it's going to be snowing in parts of the area. more on that particular storm with the seven-day in a few minutes. the day started off wet, and now it is unseasonably warm outside. we found plenty of people out enjoy this unusually mild late november day. nbc 10's matt delucia is here. some people are bringing the shorts out again, really? >> reporter: vai, i don't have a jacket on for once. that's good. out here on city avenue, we're just dealing with wet roads but other than that it's not too shabby. the mercury is rising and for some of the folks that i have been talking with today, that's all that matters. before bone-chilling temperatures last week and now a mild monday, it's hard to tell what season it really is. all jerry kill llanian

all jerry kill llania knows is still sweeping up leaves. after he's done cleaning up the streets, there's stim time to enjoy. >> clean my car, take a ride. i don't know. see how it works out. >> reporter: overat st. joe's we found people who are already committed to the cold. you put all your summer clothes away? >> yes, indeed. they were all washed. just found this in the cellular. >> when i woke up i saw it was 60. not sunny but i was like 60 i'm putting shorts on. >> reporter: t-shirts and shorts are back in the wardrobe at least for one day. >> i guess you got to take what you can get. >> reporter: until another taste of winter. >> i like the snow and the cold weather. >> reporter: you don't like this? >> no. it's too humid and then my hair gets unstraightened and i don't like it. >> reporter: you can't please everybody, but hey, at least people aren't running for shelter like last week. the only thing we're dealing with out here right now is a little bit of wind, and with all those wet leaves blowing off the trees and onto the streets, they

bring that to you as soon as it happens and we'll do it live. meanwhile, skyforce 10 was over an accident on kelly drive near boathouse row. this happened around 8:00 this morning. several vehicles were involved. we're working to find out if anyone was seriously hurt. one person was killed in an accident involving a bread truck and an suv early this morning. the accident happened in the northbound lanes of 95 near route 322 and curlin street in chester. and in northeast philadelphia, philadelphia police cruiser collided with an ambulance early this morning. the crash happened at around 3:30 at mcgee and torresdale avenues in tacony. there were no patients inside the ambulance. a passenger was taken to the hospital for minor bumps and bruises. no police officers were hurt. police in northampton county are trying to track down the mother of three two disappeared on friday. jessica was last seen leaving

her job at a daycare in northampton. investigators say she left work to send a fax but never returned. volunteers have put up missing person flyers on street signs and store fronts. her car turned up in a dollar general parking lot about a mile from her job. her cell phone was in the vehicle along with some other personal items. we talked with one of her friends about the disappearance. >> this is not something that happened at night. this was smack dab in the middle of the day. the community needs to be aware because somebody out there knows something. somebody had to see something whether they know it or not. somebody had to see something. >> family and friends have created a facebook page to help find jessica. if you have any information you're asked to call state police. happening now, a former montgomery county political leader is scheduled to go on trial. former county republican chairman robert kerns will face a judge for charges of aggravated indecent assault. an employee at his law firm

accused him of getting her drinks and sexual assaulting her after she passed out in october of 2013. kerns has chosen not to have a jury hear his case. a judge will decide his case inste stead. the man who admitted to killing etan patz will find out today if that confession will be allowed no court. he said he lured the wou to the basement of a store and strangled him. police arrested hernandez in 2012 at his home in maple shade. his defense attorney says he is mentally ill and not capable of understanding his rights. therefore, the confession should not be allowed. and this morning the legal battle between donald trump and the casino company bearing his name is continuing to wilmington. the two sides are right now arguing their case in u.s. bankruptcy course. trump is suing trump entertainment resorts. he wants his name removed from the company because he claims the company has harmed his brand

by letting the casinos fall into des pay rare. the taj is expected to close december 12th. a bankruptcy hearing in new york city today will determine the future of revel. according to reports lawyers will try to rescue the sale of the casino/hotel. a canadian firm announced last week it backed out of the $110 million bid to buy revel because of concerns over the utility bill. it's unclear if that company will be at today's hearing. the casino crisis is impacting the holiday season, and with just days until thanksgiving, food banks in the atlantic city area face an unprecedented need. four casinos closed this year and that left 7,600 people without jobs. if the taj mahal closes next month, that would add another 3,000 people. nbc 10's jesse gary reports that it's really causing a strain at one food bank. >> reporter: four closings of casinos so far this year with a possible fifth have left stretches of this boardwalk

deserted 37 many people have moved but the vast majority have sought help from social relief agencies. an influx three times the norm have left food -- president obama is about to speak from the date dining room from the white house what where he will announce the resignation of chuck hagel. less than two years into the job and in the wake of new threats like isis administration officials have told nbc news that hagel is, quote, no longer up to the job. let's go to nbc's chris jansing on duty at the white house. good morning to you. what can you tell us about this? >> reporter: well, i know that this conversation has been going on for the last several weeks between chuck hagel and the president. it started last month. he offered his resignation and

obviously it was accepted this morning. he becomes the first casualty after that disastrous election for the democrats and the senate now being taken over by republicans. there were a lot of questions raised from the very beginning. he had what was widely considered to be a bad confirmation process, and he never seemed to quite recover, never made his way into the president's inner circle in spite of the fact that they had been friendly during the time that they both served on the foreign relations committee when they were both in the senate. hagel being the only republican on the foreign policy on the national security team here at the white house, and so the decision was made that they needed new leadership at the pentagon. chuck hagel -- >> i'll interrupt here. we have the president. >> about a year ago secretary of defense chuck hagel was visiting our troops in the republic of korea thanking them for their service and answering their questions, and they asked about

the usual topics, about our national security, the future of our military, and then one soldier, a sergeant from ohio, asked him what was the most pertinent question of the day, which is what was your favorite college football team, to which chuck replied, born and raised in nebraska, i don't have a choice, i am a strong cornhusker's fan. now, there was a time when an enlisted soldier might have been reluctant to ask that kind of question of the secretary of defense, but chuck hagel has been no ordinary secretary of defense. the first enlisted combat veteran to serve in that position. he understands our men and women like few others because he stood where they've stood. he's been in the dirt and he's been in the mud, and that's established a special bond. he sees himself in them, and they see themselves in him.

and their safety, their lives have always been at the center of chuck's service. when i asked chuck to serve as secretary of defense, we were entering a significant period of transition, the drawdown in afghanistan, the need to prepare our forces for future missions and tough fiscal choices to keep our military strong and ready. over nearly two years chuck has been an exemplary defense secretary providing a steady hand as we modernize our strategy and budget to meet long-term threats while still responding to immediate challenges like isil and ebola. thanks to chuck our military is on a firmer footing engaged in these missions and looking ahead to the future. now, last month chuck came to me to discuss the final quarter of my presidency and determined that having guided the department through this

transition, it was an appropriate time for him to complete his service. let me just say that chuck is and has been a great friend of mine. i have known him, admired him, and trusted him for nearly a decade since i was a green behind the ears freshman senator and we were both on the senate foreign relations committee. if there's one thing i know about chuck, it's that he does not make this or any decision lightly. this decision does not come easily to him, but i consider myself extraordinarily lucky to have him by my side for two years and i am grateful chuck has agreed to stay on until i nominate a successor and that successor is confirmed by the senate, which mean that is he will continue to guide our troops at this challenging time. i'll have more opportunity to pay tribute to chuck's life of service in the days ahead. for now let me just say this, chuck hagel has devoted himself to our national security and our

men and women in uniform across more than six decades. he volunteered for vietnam and still carries the scars and shrapnel from the battles that he fought. at the va he fought to give our veterans, especially his fellow vietnam veterans, the benefits they had earned. as head of the uso, he made sure america always honors our troops. as a senator he helped lead the fight for the post-9/11 gi bill which is helping so many of our newest veterans and their family realize their dreams of a college education. as secretary chuck has helped transition our military and bolstered america's leadership around the world. during his tenure afghan forces took the lead for security in afghanistan, our forces have drawn down, our combat mission there ends next month, and we'll partner with afghans to preserve the gains we have made. the nato alliance is as strong as it has ever been, and we have

reassured our allies with our increased presence in central and eastern europe. we've modernized our alliances in the asia-pacific, updated our defense posture and recently agreed to improve communications between the u.s. and chinese militaries. chuck has been critical to all these accomplishments. meanwhile, chuck's ensured that our military is ready for new missions. today our men and women in uniform are taking the fight against isil in iraq and syria and chuck helped build the international coalition. today our forces are helping support the civilian effort against ebola in west africa, a reminder as chuck likes to say that the american military is the greatest force or good in the world. plus chuck has never lost sight

of key priorities. the readiness of our force and the quality of the lives of our troops and their families. he's launched new reforms to ensure that even as our military is leaner it remains the strongest in the world and so our troops can continue to get the pay, the housing, the health care, the child care that they and their families need. reforms that we need congress to now support. at the same time after the tragedy we have seen, chuck has helped lead the effort to improve security at our military installations and to stamp out the scourge of sexual assault from the ranks. chuck i also want to thank you on a personal level. we come from different parties, but in accepting this position you send a powerful message, especially to folks in this city that when it comes to our national security and caring for our troops and their families, we are all americans first. when i nominated you for this position you said that you'd always give me your honest

advice and informed counsel. you have. when it mattered most behind closed doors in the oval office, you have always given it to me straight, and for that i will always be grateful. you know, i recall when i was a nominee in 2008 and i traveled to afghanistan and iraq, chuck hagel accompanied me on that trip along with jack reid, and it's pretty rare at a time when sometimes this town is so politicized to have a friend who was willing to accompany a nominee from another part because he understood whoever ended up being president, what was most important was that we were unified when we confronted the challenges that we see overseas and that's the kind of class and integrity that chuck hagel has always represented. now, chuck, you have said that a

life is only as good as the family you have and the friends you surround yourself with. in that you are blessed. i want to thank your wife and son and daughter for the sacrifices they have made as well. i know as reluctant as we are to see you go, we are equally as excited to get their husband and father back, and i'm sure the cornhuskers are also happy that a fan will be there to clear them on more often. today the united states of america can proudly claim the strongest military the world has ever known. that's the result of the investments made over many decades. the blood and treasure and sacrifices of generations. it's the result of the character and wisdom of those who lead them as well, including a young army sergeant in vietnam who rose to serve as our nation's 24th secretary of defense. so on behalf of a grateful nation, thank you, chuck. [ applause ] >> thank you very much. mr. president, thank you -- >> and we will leave that press conference. the president, of course, making the announcement that chuck hagel will be stepping down as soon as a successor is named and confirmed and on that topic let's turn to chris jansing. what are you hearing about potential replacements? >> well, there's a short list and michelle thornaway who was formerly the highest ranking civilian at the pentagon and also the highest woman ever to hold such a position in that male-dominated organization, she is considered to be somebody who has a lot of respect both from the pentagon and on the hill, very important when you talk about the confirmation process.

also jack reid, the senator, he was an officer in the 82nd airborne in the army, and ash carter, a former deputy defense secretary. he also was on a short list previously. he's actually by training a theoretical physicist and former harvard professor but his time at the defense department goes back many administrations. i'm told we should not expect that the new person will be named today, and, in fact, it would be very difficult for them to get the ball rolling in such a way that they could actually have confirmation hearings before the end of the year and the republicans take over the senate so that pressure is not on, and, of course, with the thanksgiving holiday, this is a short week here, savannah. >> we'll be watching as you will too, chris jansing, senior white house correspondent. thank you very much. of course, we'll have more on nbcnews.com, tonight with "nbc nightly news." for those of you on the west coast, we have much more of "today" straight ahead. you have been watching nbc news special from the white house. president obama accepting

a volcano eruption is prompting evacuations of an island off the coast of west africa. the volcano on the cape verden island erupted yesterday. it's not known if there are any injuries or deaths following the eruption. cape verde is a former portuguese colony located about 400 miles off the coast of senegal. a 30-year-old woman in australia has been charged with the attempted murder of her newborn son. the baby was found abandoned in a drain. the baby is in serious condition at a hospital in sydney. cyclists heard cries and found the newborn yesterday morning wrapped in a hospital blanket in an eight-foot deep drain near a highway.

>> we actually thought it was a kitten or something like that. it was only when we went down there and had a real good look at it that we could hear. >> police say the baby is seven days old and may have been in the drain for as many as five days meaning he survived not only an eight-foot drop but also five days without nourishment in extremely hot temperatures. the woman faces 25 years in prison if he's convicted. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> we certainly have a wild week ahead of us here with the record warmth that is occurring today. we're already just one degree away from the high temperature record, but we've got a first alert for wednesday for snow. two days from now. and we'll talk about the thanksgiving forecast, see if it's going to be affected. well, the first alert, a wet travel day at the very least for wednesday. rain changing to snow in parts

of the area at the very least. and some accumulation, at least in parts of the area, at the very least. right now we are seeing 70 degrees. the wind 21 miles an hour gusting to 30. it's 20 degrees warmer than it was at this time yesterday. it's already 70 in allentown, 70 in mount holly, 72 in wilmington. some records already set here. not quite as warm right at this shore because of the wind coming in off of that ocean. you can see the wind arrows coming straight up from the south and southwest, and it's a pretty strong wind, too. these are the sustained winds at 20 to 25 miles an hour in part of the area, so, yeah, it's a windy and warm someday. but things are going to be changing and, yes, it can snow two days after we have record high temperatures. this is the storm that's going to develop. at the moment we're not talking about a real intense storm but i

am talking about cold air coming in and changing rain over to snow and having that snow accumulate in parts of the area. this one particular model has a good bit of snow generally north and west of philadelphia by wednesday evening. most of this is occurring during the day wednesday, and by thursday morning there's a swath of snow on the ground, at least the grassy surfaces, from virginia all the way up into new england causing all sorts of traffic issues. here is the storm time line around here. wednesday 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. it's mainly rain, starts as rain in much of the area, changing to snow north and west. it will change quickly north and west. not last that long as rain for example in allentown. and then wednesday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., that may be the peak

of the storm. so the worst travel time may be right in there during the afternoon. the snow ends wednesday night, and by thanksgiving itself you got decent travel conditions. this time of the year snow melts real fast on roads. high temperatures today in the low to mid-70s, windy with record warmth. tomorrow it's going to be sunny, not too chilly, but look at that. rain changing to snow on wednesday. cold on thanksgiving day. and cold all the way through the weekend. we'll be right back.

even more changes are ahead. we are talking about possible snow before thanksgiving. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the forecast and the possible timing. >> we first talked about this late last week, that we were going to have a storm on wednesday just before thanksgiving, and now we've got to issue a first alert because it looks very, very likely. at the very least we'll have a wet travel day. so there are going to be some issue was travel during the day on wednesday and into wednesday evening. in many areas there is going to be rain changing to snow. some places it will just melt on the roads but if it comes down hard enough, it does have the potential to stick. some accumulation be the greatest amount north and west the way it looks, including the poconos. there's a winter storm watch up for the poconos for wednesday and wednesday night. pretty heavy snow in that area

most likely. the storm developing off of the north carolina coast. we're not talking about any kind of monster storm, but it is a nor'easter. it will have a good bit of moisture with it, and it also will pull down cold air as it moves off the coast. it does not look like it's going to move out to sea. it does not look like it's going to make a left turn and hug the coast and make it just rain. so we have potential tracks that take more snow or less snow, but we don't have track that s thato snow. that's the critical thing. we'll talk more about this storm and the rest of the search-day in just a few minutes. today in buffalo warming temperatures, several feet of melting snow, and the threat of rain are prompting flood warnings. temperatures are expected to hit the 60s and that means all that snow, up to seven feet in some spots, could lead to problems for people in buffalo.

many are scrambling to clear roofs and uncover drains. officials are keeping a close eye on creeks and streams as the snow melts and wet weather moves in. the national guard is on stand by. the buffalo bills and new york jets will square off tonight in detroit, but it's not a regularly scheduled monday night football match-up. the nfl moved the game after all that snow fell in new york. some fans camped out outside ford field for free tickets. kickoff is set for 7:00 tonight. people in georgia are cleaning up from the powerful storms that destroyed at least three homes there. the bunbridge family is grateful no one was hurt when their home was damaged, especially considering a tree crashed down right where their 6-year-old son normally sleeps. >> usually in the evening time on sundays after church he comes in and takes an hour nap or what not. but then just to note that's where he lays his head is kind of scary. >> thousands of people are still

11:38, skyforce 10 was over a building collapse in the mantua section this morning. it appears this is a vacant building and no one there was hurt. happening today the lehigh valley school district and the teachers union will go before the labor board over contract negotiations. they claim the teachers are bargaining in bad faith. the board says the teachers are asking for more money than they did at the beginning of the contract talks. the union says it could counter sue but that would be a waste of time and money. the two sides have been negotiating since january of 2012. do you need a black friday game plan? well, ahead, see which stores are offering the best deals and we'll show you why you may actually want to start your shopping today but not before

important. the first alert is for at the very least a wet travel day on wednesday. some of this precipitation is likely to be heavy. we do expect rain changing to snow at least in parts of the area and accumulating snow in parts of the area. enough of an accumulation to cause some driving concerns and maybe delays at airports and trains and things like that right on the busiest travel period. here we are already 70 degrees in allentown and setting a record already. 72 in wilmington. philadelphia, 70. we're one degree away from the record in several places already. you can see how much cooler it is still in harbor with the wind off the cooler ocean. 49 degrees is still fairly warm for a winter storm. that's going to make the forecast tricky, too. the flags are blowing hard. that's a southerly wind that's bringing in the warm air. 70 degrees. southwest wind at 21 miles an

hour gusting to 30. that's 20 degrees warmer than at this time yesterday, and we're gusting to 30 in much of the area, 33-mile-an-hour gusts in trenton and in dover right now. and there is a winter storm watch for wednesday and wednesday night for the poconos and i've added these other areas because obviously a lot of people are going to be traveling. there may be other watches used in central pennsylvania and down through the mountains before this is over with, but much of connecticut, massachusetts, parts of new england, interior new york state going to get big amounts of snow, and even in the poconos we have the potential for major snowfall. this is the thing doing it, the storm coming up the coast. it's not going to be a real, real intense one. these white lines, if they were real close together, that would show an intense storm. we're not talking about a lot of

wind but there's a lot of moisture. this time of year and again in the spring you can get heavy, wet snow. most of it goes onto the grass but if it comes down hard enough, it can stick on roads, so we do have the potential here for some significant accumulation and as a result significant problems, and look how heavy that is up in new england by thanksgiving morning. so know there are going to be some issues. the storm time line, wednesday, 6:00 to 10:00 a.m., it's changing to snow already north and west. 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the peak of the storm, even in the philadelphia area likely to get at least some snow here, and 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. it's ending. thanksgiving we're drying out itself. now, for the rest of the day today, windy, record warmth, low to mid-70s. wind gusts to 40 miles an hour. tomorrow not all that cold but cooler than today, and then believe it or not, we can get

snow by wednesday, and it may start off well above freezing but it's going to cool down as we go through the day. there's colder air coming in and it's going to stay cold through the rest of the thanksgiving holiday. and we'll be right back. start off well above freezing

breaking news we've been following. the announcement on the resignation of defense secretary chuck hagel. president obama says hagel concluded it was an appropriate time for him to complete his service. the president called hagel an exemplary defense secretary and steady hand for strategy and budget. hagel has had a rocky tenure of nearly two years in which he struggled to break through the white house's foreign policy team. he is stepping down under pressure and multiple crises including the rise of isis. still, president obama says he'll always be grateful to hagel. >> when it's mattered most behind closed doors in the oval office, you have always given it to me strayed and for thight an will always be grateful. >> hagel will stay in place at the pentagon until the senate confirms his successor. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with a check of your afternoon weather. man, it's warm. >> this afternoon record warmth, well into the 70s.

by wednesday we're talking about snow and we're talking about snow even in the philadelphia i-95 corridor and possibly toward the shore. we're talking about potential for a big accumulation in some areas. so we'll get new data over the next few hours and come up with the specific snow forecasts for your area this afternoon and into tonight. this very tricky storm, as are most of them early and late in the season because the ocean is just so warm, any wind coming in off the ocean could easily change snow back to rain. that's one of the things that makes it tricky. >> of course, it goes without saying such a busy holiday travel weekend that, you know, it's especially difficult for folks driving. >> it makes it especially important because it's not just what happens here, it's what happens in other areas like new york, boston, and back to the west toward pittsburgh because that will affect travel around here, too. >> all right. we'll be paying attention, glenn. thank you. thanks for watching nbc 10 news at 11:00.
